Tips to Reduce Waste

DRIED ORANGE ORNAMENTS

This Christmas try incorporating some natural decorations into your home rather than purchasing decor that is artificial. Pine cones, tree boughs, cinnamon sticks, chestnuts and dried oranges are natural yet festive! Dried oranges can be used to make a garland, to decorate a table centrepiece or as ornaments on a tree.

Here is a simple DIY recipe for you to try:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Slice oranges about 1/4″ thick evenly around and gently remove any seeds.

Pat the slices dry on both sides with a towel to absorb the juice.

Lay them down on the baking sheet and put in the oven for approximately 4 hours.

Every 45 minutes or so turn them over so that they dry evenly on each side.

Take them out of the oven when they are firm on the outside but still a little squishy on the inside. You don’t want them brown.

Lay them on a rack to cool (they will continue to dry for days after).

Use twine or a metal ornament hanger to hang them up.

Compost them at the end of their life.
